Ray Laconico, a renowned US knife designer, embarked on a creative journey inspired by 1990s Rambo movies. With the sale of his inaugural knife in 2005, he cemented his passion for the craft. Initially crafting fixed blade and Bowie knives for outdoor pursuits, Ray transitioned to mastering folding knives by 2010, solidifying his position as a leading designer of EDC pocket knives worldwide.

Ray chose to pay tribute to his start of way. He crafted a substantial and robust knife tailored for hard use, ensuring both durability and quality performance. The fixed blade construction of Stingray guarantees reliability and sturdiness, while the D2 steel blade, with a 4 mm thickness, ensures enduring and high-quality usage.
The choice of D2 steel for this knife was deliberate – for a reason.

D2 steel has excellent properties that make it well-suited for demanding tasks. D2 is known as a high-carbon, wear-resistant steel, making it ideal for applications where durability and edge retention are crucial.
The composition of D2 steel typically includes about
- 1.5% carbon,
- 12% chromium,
- 1% molybdenum,
- and vanadium, among other elements.
The strength of D2 steel lies in its high levels of carbon and chromium, which contribute to its exceptional hardness and wear resistance. The presence of molybdenum enhances its toughness, allowing the blade to withstand heavy use without chipping or breaking easily. Additionally, vanadium helps improve the steel’s overall strength and wear resistance.
Overall, D2 steel is favored for hard-use knives as it offers a balance of hardness, edge retention, and toughness, making it a reliable choice for tasks that require a durable and long-lasting cutting edge.
We approached the selection of handle material with the same level of seriousness as the blade material, if not more.
The significance of the handle material is often underestimated.
Micarta is a composite material commonly used in knife handles known for its durability and excellent grip characteristics. It is created by layering linen, canvas, paper, or other fabric with a thermosetting plastic such as phenolic resin. This combination is then compressed and baked to form a solid material that is resistant to heat, water, and wear.
The micarta used in the Stingray knife handle is specifically manufactured by BPS Knives. We produce micarta by combining fabric with an epoxied resin. Overall, BPS Knives micarta handle material offers a balance of strength, durability, and tactility, making it an excellent choice for the Stingray knife.
The distinctive feature of this knife lies in the inclusion of a spare handle and guard for interchangeable use.

The knife initially comes with a handle without a guard, which allows for comfortable handling when working with wood and other robust materials.
When opting for the handle with a guard, users gain the advantage of utilizing the knife for chopping and other tasks requiring added protection. This flexibility enables users to customize the knife to their preferences independently, even if they are just exploring the notion of personalizing the knife to align with their needs.
The Stingray, designed by Ray Laconico, signifies a significant leap in promoting Ukrainian knives from BPS Knives on the global stage. Don’t miss the chance to be among the first to experience this fixed blade knife by Ray Laconico & BPS Knives.
Merge quality, functionality, and style with the Stingray knife.
