Knives can easily be compared to people. There are the great and the not-so-great, the gifted and the average, the world-famous and the forgettable. But there’s one more fascinating — and paradoxical — category: the “average” ones. Quiet, unassuming, they don’t attract much attention. You’d never guess they’re capable of anything remarkable. And yet, they’re the ones who cross the finish line — sometimes even succeeding where the “best” fall short. That’s exactly the kind of knife we’ve created — the Colibri folding knife.

How it all began: the first folding knives by BPS Knives

This is our very first folding knife, and it’s sure to win the hearts of many EDC blade enjoyers! We’ve been working toward this for a long time.

First steps into the world of folding knives — June 2021

Our first folder knife design started in June, when we started working on the first prototype of a friction folding knife — a simple yet important design that doesn’t require locks. On June 29th, we assembled and tested our very first model, the result of months of ideas, sketches, and experiments with shape and mechanism. Even then, the prototype laid the foundation for future models and inspired us to keep developing.

Friction Folder serial launch — August 2021

And now, we have finally reached the launch of serial production for our EDC friction folder, a project we put a lot of effort into! The first production model of the Friction Folder was released on August 24, 2021, marking an important milestone for us. We aimed to preserve the traditional style while incorporating modern design elements that ensure reliability and everyday convenience. The portable knife turned out minimalist yet fully functional, winning the appreciation of many.

Development and improvement – the path to Colibri

But we never rest on our laurels — it’s not the time to slow down! Faster, stronger, better, right? We decided to create a fully-fledged folding knife with a locking mechanism, one that would drive all EDC enthusiasts wild. And guess what? We nailed it!

Technical specifications – what is important to know about the Colibri knife

Let’s take a closer look at our best everyday knife!

Basic parameters of the knife (length, weight, thickness).

The overall length of the knife when opened is 185 mm, when folded – 105 mm. Its blade, measuring 80 mm long and 3 mm thick, is large enough to handle a wide range of tasks: cutting cardboard, ropes, and branches for kindling, slicing food, filleting fish — it’s perfect for all your camp setup needs.

14C28N stainless steel blade – why this particular steel for folded blades?

But most importantly, its blade is made from high-quality 14C28N stainless steel! This means our Colibri isn’t afraid of moisture or dirt and resists rust exceptionally well. However, that doesn’t mean it requires no care — even a blade made from the finest, almost otherworldly stainless steel needs proper cleaning, maintenance, and handling.

G10 handle – how does it feel in the hand?

The 105 mm handle is made from the renowned, durable, and practical composite material G10! It feels solid, grippy, and lightweight in the hand. The texture offers excellent traction, even when wet, though it can be a bit rough depending on the pattern. Comfort varies—flat handles can feel blocky, but contoured ones are much better. It’s a hard, rigid material with no flex, so it doesn’t absorb shock, but it stays neutral in temperature and works well in all conditions. Overall, it’s durable, practical, and secure to hold.

Blade hardness (59-60 HRC) and what it gives in everyday life

The blade’s hardness of 59-60 HRC offers awesome performance qualities:

Good Edge Retention

At 59–60 HRC, the steel is hard enough to maintain a sharp edge for a decent amount of time. You won’t need to sharpen it frequently during normal use like food prep, cutting boxes, ropes, or plastic.

Reasonable Toughness

While not as tough as softer steels (e.g., 56–58 HRC), blades at this hardness can still handle moderate abuse, such as light prying or twisting during cutting. However, they’re more prone to chipping than lower-HRC blades if used knife folder improperly.

Sharpenability

Knives in this range are still relatively easy to sharpen:

  • Easier to sharpen than very hard steels
  • Harder to sharpen than soft utility steels
  • Can be maintained at home with a whetstone or ceramic rod

Reliability and Convenience in Every Move: Liner Lock, Hidden Flipper, and Carrying Clip

A knife’s dependability starts with its locking system — and the Colibri excels in this area. Its precisely crafted liner lock keeps the blade securely in place when open, offering maximum safety and confidence during use. For quick and instinctive deployment, the hidden flipper allows for smooth opening without interrupting the knife’s sleek, snag-free design.

The carrying clip ensures the knife stays discreetly tucked away, yet always within easy reach. This thoughtful design makes the Colibri an excellent choice for those who value practicality, subtlety, and a clean, streamlined appearance — until it’s time to get to work.

Design to choose from: two colors – two moods: choose yours

Our Colibri is practical and sleek, yet stylish! It’s available in two colors:

Colibri Black – classic in black

A classic really nice pocket knife with a black handle — timeless and never goes out of style. Its simple, curved shape, reliable mechanism, and subtle steel shine hide strength and character beneath the surface. This knife doesn’t shout for attention, but it’s always there when you need it — whether you’re on a hike, doing woodworking, or facing the everyday challenges of life. In its understated design lies its charm, and in the worn edges, the story you create (hopefully without any poking someone).

Colibri Green+Black – when you want a little color

But not just classic — we also have a truly stylish option! A green handle paired with a black blade. It looks seriously tactical, like it was just drawn from the belt of some commando. The contrasting color scheme immediately catches the eye, and the matte finish on the blade not only adds a rugged look but also reduces glare — a purely practical advantage. This is the choice for those who want to combine functionality with mature, understated charisma. This knife isn’t just a tool — it’s a statement. Make that two.

Practical application – where and how Colibri will show itself best

And most importantly: where and under what conditions does our Colibri truly shine?

The perfect knife for everyday carry (EDC)

The most important use and true purpose of the Colibri is to be an indispensable part of your everyday carry (EDC) kit! It’s an incredibly compact and lightweight pocket knife, yet handles tasks like opening packages, cutting rope, or quick fixes on the go with ease. Its sleek design and sharp blade make it the perfect pocket EDC knife companion. Discreet and stylish, it fits seamlessly into any urban lifestyle!

Use in hiking, camping and nature

But it also shines out in nature! Its sturdy stainless steel blade handles camp chores like a champ — cutting kindling for the fire, working with wood, slicing food, and much more. Just don’t chop firewood with it — this knife won’t forgive you that!

For light work at home and in the workshop

A fold out knife shines when it comes to light-duty tasks, both around the house and in a workshop setting. It fits just awesome for quick jobs that don’t require specialized tools.
